As covert factions amass influence, society collapses and vanishes. A hushed interval ensues. Time drifts on as reality slowly mends. Turning away and finding one's sense of balance and collective protection from infirmity requires a fluid embrace of isolationism, deep empathy, and self-love. Multiple storms pass. Dragonfly is a rotorcraft expected to perform vertical take-offs and landings on the surface of Saturn's moon Titan in 2034. Titan is a world like our own with oceans, rivers, and lakes. On Titan though, our water cycle is replaced with hydrocarbons, it rains liquid methane, and the surface temperature averages -179 degrees Celsius. The first section of Probe features contrapuntal melodies with a set of roto-toms representing the probe, flower pots representing the possibility of something growing in such a frigid place, and a rainstick representing the potential food source for a hypothetical methanogen. Perseverance will roam the dry, dusty surface of Mars beginning in 2021 drilling and preparing samples that will, for the first time, be returned to Earth. Perseverance will also carry with it a small rotorcraft to prove the ability of flight within Mars’ thin atmosphere. In the second section, tonal harmony is replaced with sandpaper blocks, claves, and bongos with the roto-toms now playing the role of both the secondary rotorcraft and the Martian wind. Alvin has been ferrying explorers to the deepest parts of Earth's oceans and providing insights into the origins of life since the 1970s. The discovery of large tubeworms living in an environment without sunlight, thriving on the energy provided to them by hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor, changed our understanding of how life might thrive in many environments across the universe. The conclusion of Probe features Boomwhackers appearing as tubeworms. PDF: $14.00 *Print: $36.00; includes $8.00 s&h PDF+Print: $43.00; includes $8.00 s&h</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - duo (2016)</image:title>
<image:caption>for unaccompanied flute and oboe duration; 8:00 I) allegro II) slow III) spiritedly DUO is a conversation between two instruments that share many of the same functions within an ensemble, although they each have their own unique qualities that make them invaluable. As with many well-suited pairings of unique individuals, sometimes each member of the DUO speaks the same language but from a different perspective. This is represented musically in the second movement by an extended palindrome. At other times, each member flies right past the other without much consideration. Conversations often remain left open. Hopefully, for the sake of the DUO, frustrations and arguments (represented musically both with strings of monotonous chromaticism and long "sighs" through the instrument while the other is "talking") resolve harmoniously, like in the three-pitch "I Love You" motive that closes the second movement. I wanted to write something for students that would musically represent the build up and removal of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. I decided to use additive chord tones (7ths, 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths) to create tension and to build thicker textures analogous to the build up of atmospheric pollutants. Pedagogically, opportunities for teaching different balance situations exist with sections balanced using standard “McBeth” pyramid dynamics and short sections of “white noise” dynamics. The piece begins with a standard 3-pitch major chord in Bb Major and ends with the open, clean interval of a Perfect 5th (Bb/F). Ranges are all within intermediate levels with doublings throughout. Ultimately though, the piece is melodic, lyrical and hopeful. This work for concert band takes its title from the first section of Cato’s novel. It is intended for use by a varsity level middle school or non-varsity high school band. The music is representative of the first few steps taken along a life’s journey from innocent beginnings through first encounters with love, heartbreak, and loss, culminating with the realization that through all of its twists and turns, the river remains a constant source of perpetual renewal. Nancy Fotheringham Cato AM (11 March 1917 – 3 July 2000) was an Australian writer who published more than twenty historical novels, biographies, and volumes of poetry. Frequently associated with the Jindyworobak Movement, Cato was also known for her work campaigning on environmental and conservation issues. The books tell a multi-generational story of humanity and its intelligent creation's first expansion into another solar system. While the piece is programmatic in its outlining of characters and plot, the overall structure is that of a musical portrait of life on land (Tantor), in the sea (Poseidon’s Children), and finally, journeying into space (The Remembering).</image:caption>

Some of my favorite memories as a student in public school band include performing various arrangements of J.S. Bach. I loved sitting in the trumpet section listening across the ensemble to how the various melodic lines would rapidly fizz around from instrument to instrument. This short, two movement work is designed to foster this listening experience in your students. The first movement consists of a simple, binary form, with woodwinds and brass trading off a slow melodic line. The ensemble then combines to allow for the exploration of top to bottom, back to front balance and blend without having to worry about too much technique. There are also moments of modernity in the harmonic structure designed to help anchor the movement to the present. The second movement is a fugue with a long melodic subject and two countersubjects, the point of which is to apply the listening lessons from the first movement to the more technical aspects of the second. Fugue subjects are announced with percussion entrances to focus the listening experience across the ensemble and the audience. The Chizo Indians were a nomadic group that used to inhabit Northern Mexico and the Big Bend area of Texas. The Chisos Mountains are the only mountain range contained entirely within the boundaries of a national park. Spirits. The Terlingua Ghost Town was once the home of thousands of Mexican mercury miners. It is said that the spirits of those miners return to the Terlingua Cemetery annually during Dia de los Muertos to enjoy an evening of celebration and remembrance with their loved ones. Spirits. Red Ancho. A bowl of red. Each fall, hundreds of spirited culinary adventurers travel to the Big Bend area to extract magic and good times from dried, ruby-red chili pods. Big Bend National Park and the surrounding area is like no other place on Earth. The people who call this part of Texas home are also like no other. This piece is dedicated to all of them, past and present, and to the land they cherish. <image:caption>A group of five galaxies that appear close to each other in the sky: two in the middle, one toward the top, one to the upper left, and one toward the bottom. Four of the five appear to be touching. One is somewhat separated. In the image, the galaxies are large relative to the hundreds of much smaller (more distant) galaxies in the background. All five galaxies have bright white cores. Each has a slightly different size, shape, structure, and coloring. Scattered across the image, in front of the galaxies are number of foreground stars with diffraction spikes: bright white points, each with eight bright lines radiating out from the center.
