Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, program for fourth movement
In motion
Uninhibited
Mixolydian
She's got eggs
Cali plates
or some other state
He now lives in Texas
for all the wrong reasons
We move to the beat
of the talk in the street
barely treading water
while we're cursing The Man
we all must eat
Walking to her car that night
he came creeping up behind her
from out of the shadows
to steal her power and innocence
Now she trains after work
to bob and weave and punch and kick
Never again to fear the dark
He learned to fight at an early age
by defending himself from his father
He put his skills to use by later joining
an Army of too many others who
had lived and grown through similarly
violent upbringings and feats of rage
Somehow perpetual motion
a look across an ocean
an invitation to dance continues
being offered and accepted
and life and the beat goes on
